Lectotype of Mycomystes ferrugineus Gorham, 1888 , here designated ( BMNH; Figure 34 View Figures 34-39 )

‘Type [disc-shaped label, printed]\Sp. figured. Type. [printed]\ Cerro de Plumas , Mexico, Hoege . [printed] Mycomystes ferruginea [handwritten]\B.C.A.,Col.,VII. [printed]\NHMUK 014014265 [printed]’.

Diagnosis

Body oval. According to Gorham (1888): length: 7.5 mm. ‘(...) entirely pale rusty-red, with the exception of the apical half of the antennae and the tips of the mandibles. The punctuation is very fine and close, except that of the sides of the breast, where large but irregularly shaped punctures are to be found; these irregular punctures have a tendency to form longitudinal rows, and are occasionally confluent. The abdomen is finely punctate. The tibiae have their inner side a little sinuate, the outer side widened and forming an angle at the end, which is somewhat obliquely truncate (the insertion of the tarsi being quite on the inner side); their upper and under surfaces are flat and slightly pubescent. Both the abdominal and metasternal impressed lines are present.’. Additional characters: elytral punctation confluent at disc.

Distribution

‘ Mexico, Cerro de Plumas’ ( Gorham 1888). According to Pecci-Maddalena and Lopes- Andrade (2020), the exact location of ‘Cerro de Plumas’ is unknown. It may refer to ‘Cerro de Palmas’ in Veracruz, introduced as a correction to ‘Cerro de Plumas’ in a subsequent issue of Biologia Centrali-Americana ( Selander and Vaurie 1962) ( Figure 56 View Figure 56 ).

Remarks

The lectotype of Mycomystes ferrugineus was examined only from images, therefore ventral characters were not verified. Concerning the number of syntypes, although Gorham (1888) has mentioned two specimens of Mycomystes ferrugineus on his description, we observed only a single specimen on the available image of the museum drawer.
