The comparison between the holotype of Trichophorus variatus Newman, 1841 and one of the three syntypes of Elaphidion elegans Chevrolat, 1861 allows us to propose the present synonymy. The examined type specimens of both species names are deposited, respectively, in OXUM and BMNH.
The names of varieties proposed for Elaphidion elegans by Chevrolat (1861), viz var. hirsutum , var. jocosum , and var. puberulum , were not expressely given infrasubspecific rank, nor does the content of the work of Chevrolat indicate that the author refers to varieties as infrasubspecific entities. Therefore, in accordance with Article 45.6.4 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature ( ICZN, 1999), these names must be deemed as of subspecific category and thus available. On the other hand, we consider these names invalid and synonyms of Centrocerum variatum , judging the differences noted by Chevrolat as intraspecific variation of this species and not as indication of the existence of more than one taxon.
