Material studied. Holotype male. NEW CALEDONIA, Mont Nondoué, sclerophyllous forest, 3.VII.1992, Bonnet de Larbogne, Chazeau & Guilbert (in MNHN). Paratypes. 54 males, same data as holotype (51 in MNHN, 1 in MZH, 1 in SMNH, 1 in PWMP); 1 male, Rivière Bleue N.P., (parc 6), rainforest, 16.VII.1992, Bonnet de Larbogne, Chazeau & Guilbert (in MNHN); 1 male, Pointe de Cagou, 166°20’E, 21°20’S, 30 m, humid forest, 5– 8.IX.1984, Tillier & Bouchet (in MNHN); 2 males, Pindaï, sclerophyllous forest, fogging, 30.VI.1992, Bonnet de Larbogne, Chazeau & Guilbert (in MNHN).
Description. Male. Head. Brown, antenna unicolorous pale brown except scapus and pedicellus paler, maxillary palpus very pale brown. Eye bridge 3 facets wide. Face with 8–18 scattered longer and shorter setae. Clypeus with 1 seta. Maxillary palpus with 3 palpomeres; palpomere 3 longer than palpomere 1, palpomere 2 shortest; palpomere 1 with 1–3 setae, with a dorsal patch of sensilla; surface of antennal flagellomeres rough, flagellomere 4 ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 A) 1.7–2.0x as long as wide, the neck shorter than broad, the longest setae longer than the width of flagellomere. Thorax. Brown, setae pale. Anterior pronotum with 2–3 setae. Episternum 1 with 3–7 setae. Scutum with long dorsocentrals, with some longer and shorter laterals, scutellum with 4 longer and some short setae. Wing. Hyalinous. Length 1.1–1.2 mm. Width/length 0.45–0.50. Veins distinct. R1/R 0.45–0.65. c/ w 0.70 – 0.80. r-m and bM subequal in length. M, CuA, r-m and bM non-setose. Legs. Yellow. Coxal setae pale. Apical part of front tibia, Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B: tibial organ with pale vestiture forming a short row. Front tibial spur slightly shorter than the tibial width. Claws with fine teeth. Abdomen. Brown, setae pale and fine. Hypopygium, Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 C, D. Brown, concolorous with abdomen. Gonocoxa longer than gonostylus, mesial margin with sparse setosity. Gonostylus slightly curved, narrowed towards apex, with the mesial side weakly impressed at apical fourth; with a dense apical vestiture, with an apical tooth, with 5 megasetae in subapical group, without apical megasetae. Tegmen subquadrangular, weakly sclerotized, aedeagal apodeme long.
Discussion. Ctenosciara depilis is similar to C. nudopteryx Mohrig from New Zealand and differs from all other known species of Ctenosciara by having all posterior wing veins non-setose. The species has also the front tibial organ atypical for Ctenosciara , resembling more the type common in Bradysia : the setal elements in a short row on a common basal body, with a bare area on their proximal side ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 B). By its gonostylus with a strong apical tooth and 5 long megasetae in one subapical group, C. depilis resembles most C. depressa , but lacks the lateral depressed area ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 C and 5 C).
Etymology. The name is Latin, depilis , without hairs, referring to non-setose M, CuA1 and CuA2.
