status

6. Smithia grandis Bentham ex Baker (1876: 151) .

Type citation: — “Base of the Himalayas in SIKKIM, Herb. Griffith, Hook. f.”

Lectotype (designated here): — INDIA. East Himalaya , Darjiling (Darjeeling), s.d., Griffith 1617 (K000859002!).

Residual syntypes: — BANGLADESH. East Bengal, s.d., Griffith 1617 (P02913920! and CAL0000012757 About CAL !) ; INDIA. Sikkim, 1000 ft., J.D. Hooker s.n. ( CAL0000012758 About CAL !, M0233761!, P02913919! and S13-12435!) .

Distribution: — Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and West Bengal).

Notes: — Baker (1876) described Smithia grandis on the basis of specimens collected by Griffith and J.D. Hooker, but no specific herbarium sheet was designated as holotype. Pertaining to the specification given in the protologue, three specimens of herbarium Griffith (K000859002, P02913920 and CAL0000012757) and four of J.D. Hooker were traced (CAL0000012758, M0233761, P02913919 and S13-12435). Of these, the best one, K000859002, is designated here as the lectotype as it agrees well with the protologue.
