status

Astrolepis sinuata (Lag. ex Sw.) D.M.Benham & Windham subsp. sinuata, Amer. Fern J. View in CoL 82(2): 56. 1992.

= Notholaena sinuata (Lag. ex Sw.) Kaulf., Enum. Filic. 135. 1824.

= Cheilanthes sinuata (Lag. ex Sw.) Domin subsp. sinuata, Biblioth. Bot. View in CoL 85(1): 133. 1913.

Range: —Hispaniola; in arid montane regions from southwestern U.S.A. to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, SC, TA) and northeastern Argentina.

Ecology: —Fairly common; terrestrial in arid regions, often among rocks, on rocky banks or in rock crevices; (500–)850–3000(–3800) m.

Notes: —Blades 1-pinnate-pinnatifid; pinnae with wavy (sinuate) margins, abaxially with a layer of dissected scales. The species is most easily confused with Myriopteris aurea , with which it often co-occurs, but that species has hairs on the blades and a slightly different pinna shape. An additional subspecies, subsp. mexicana D.M.Benham , occurs in Mexico ( Benham & Windham 1992). Arizona populations were studied by Hevly (1965).
