Astrolepis D.M.Benham & Windham, Amer. Fern J. View in CoL 82(2): 55. 1992.

Astrolepis View in CoL comprises eight species ( Beck et al. 2010) and ranges from the southwestern U.S.A. to northwestern Argentina; most of the diversity is in Mexico ( Mickel & Smith 2004). The genus was relatively recently segregated from Cheilanthes View in CoL and Notholaena View in CoL ( Benham & Windham 1992, Benham 1992), but is now believed to be more closely related to Pellaea View in CoL and may be phylogenetically nested in that genus, if Pellaea View in CoL is treated in its historically broad sense (see, e.g., Schuettpelz et al. 2007, Eiserhardt et al. 2011). As defined here, Astrolepis View in CoL is recognized by star-shaped (stellate) scales, and two vascular bundles in the petioles (vs. one in all other cheilanthoids). Monophyletic ( Beck et al. 2010).
