Range: — Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia (BE, CO, LP, SC).
Ecology: —Fairly common; in wet primary and secondary forests; 1500–3000 m.
Notes: —Stout spines present on petioles, at least proximally; blades ternate, 2-pinnate-pinnatifid (3-pinnate-pinnatifid at bases); proximal pinna-pair pedicellate and pinnate, the pedicels (ca. 0.5 cm long) not winged; venation areolate, with only one very elongate areole adjoining costae between two adjacent costules; awns present on costae adaxially.
Testo et al. (2015) recently described a hybrid between this species and P. podophylla ; the hybrid was intermediate in morphology.
