Ardisia blatteri Gamble (1921: 121) View in CoL
Lectotype (designated here): — INDIA. High Wavy Mountain , 4000–5000 ft, May 1917, Blatter & Hallberg 564 ( K barcode K000756696 [digital photo!], arrow; isolectotype CAL 279223 About CAL !), Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 .
Notes:— Gamble (1921) cited in the protologue five gatherings from South India: “ Blatter & Hallberg 3, 251, 552, 564 and T.F. Bourdillon 14”. The gatherings of “Blatter & Hallberg” are from Madura district (in a mountainous area near Cumbum) and that of “T.F. Bourdillon” is from Hills of Travancore in moist forest of Tamil Nadu.
According to Stafleu & Cowan (1976) the Gamble’s herbarium is kept at K and duplicates are at B, BM, CAL, DD, H, L, OXF and US. We traced relevant specimens at CAL, K and MH that can be considered as original material (Art. 9.3 of the ICN, McNeill et al. 2012).
The specimen “ T.F. Bourdillon 14 ” kept in MH (barcode MH00002292) consists of two twigs mounted on the same sheet, but it is doubtfully included by Gamble (1921) in the protologue of A. blatteri and cited as “ T.F. Bourdillon 14 is probably the same species, but the leaf-nervation is less conspicuous”. The specimen “ Blatter & Hallberg 552 ” kept in K (barcode K000756695) fits the protologue, but has only a single flower with the calyx and gynoecium. The specimens in K “ Blatter & Hallberg 564 ” (barcode K000756696) and “ Blatter & Hallberg 251 ” (barcode K000756697) are mounted on the same sheet. The specimen “ Blatter & Hallberg 564 ” is on right side along with dissected floral parts and sketches on a piece of paper. The specimen “ Blatter & Hallberg 251” (barcode K000756697) is on the left side with a packet including a leaf and fruits pasted at right corner of the sheet. The specimen “ Blatter & Hallberg 564” housed at CAL (No. 279223) has flowers, and fits the protologue. Finally, We were not able to trace the specimen “ Blatter & Hallberg 3” in the consulted herbaria.
The specimen “ Blatter & Hallberg 564” kept in K (barcode K000756696) clearly depicts the diagnostic characters of A. blatteri and perfectly fits the protologue, therefore, is designated here as lectotype (Arts. 9.2, 9.11 and 9.12 of the ICN, McNeill et al., 2012).
Additional specimens examined (syntypes):— INDIA. High Wavy Mountain , 4000–5000 ft, May 1917, Blatter & Hallberg 251 ( K barcode K000756697 [digital photo!]) ; Madura , Cumbum, High Wavy Mountain, 4000–5000 ft, May 1917, Blatter & Hallberg 552 ( K barcode 000756695 [digital photo!]) ; Travancore , 2000–4000 ft, February 1887, T. F. Bourdillon 14 ( MH barcode MH00002292 !) .
