Encyclopédie méthodique botanique 2: 417 (1786) . — Type: “Isle de Madagascar ”, Commerson s.n. (holo-, P-LA[ P00381923 ]!; iso-, P-JU!, P! [ P00078024 , P00078025 ]).
REMARK
In the Encyclopédie méthodique, Lamarck (1786) describes the species number 14 as “ Euphorbia lophogona ” followed by a latin description, and then the following mention “ Euphorbia Madagascariensis. Commers. Herb. & Ic. Be-tanghan (grande main) indigenis ”. We think this sentence should not be interpreted as the valid publication of a new name, junior synonym of Euphorbia lophogona Lam. , authored by Commerson ex Lamarck, but should be translated as “a Madagascan Euphorbia . Found in Commerson’s herbarium and Illustrated. Known under the indigenous name of ‘be-tanghan’ (big hand)”. “ Euphorbia madagascariensis Comm. ex Lam. ”, cited by various sources (http://www.ipni. org) as a synonym of Euphorbia lophogona Lam. has in fact never been published.
The holotype is the fragment of flower found in Lamarck Herbarium (P-LA) with the mention “flower of euphorbia number 14” by his own hand. Isotypes are found in both the Jussieu Herbarium (P-JU) and the general collection ( P) .
