Family Lestidae Calvert, 1901 View in CoL
This worldwide family is represented in New Caledonia by only two species. All Lestidae lay their eggs on either submerged or emergent parts of plants or twigs overhanging the water surface. The development and hatching of eggs in emerged parts of plants can be delayed for several weeks or months (which is known from temperate regions).
Taxonomic note: Both genera represented in New Caledonia can be distinguished by the size of the discoidal cells on fore and hind wings. They are similar in Lestes Leach, 1815 , whereas in Indolestes Fraser, 1922 , the hind wing cell is at least 1.5 times longer than its forewing cell.
