Sesleria coerulans Frivaldszky (1836: 438) View in CoL

Lectotype (designated here):—BALKAN PENINSULA. Rumelia, I. Frivaldszky 121 ( W 0030272 !). Image available at http://herbarium. univie.ac.at/database/detail.php?ID=256558.

Other original material examined:— W 1889–0246370!, WU 0067964!, BP 757750!, PRC 454474!.

Note:—Imre Frivaldszky launched (sponsored) three main collecting trips to the Balkans (Rumelia): in 1833 the collector was András Füle, who visited the territory of the present Republic of Macedonia, Turkey and Stara Planina Mts. in Bulgaria. On the second expedition the collector was Karl Hinke, who visited Stara Planina Mts., Rila and Rhodope Mts. in Bulgaria in 1834 and 1835, and Macedonia in 1836. The third expedition started in 1841, during which the collector was István Nogel ( Nendtvich 1872, Bálint & Frivaldszky 2009). The material collected during the

expeditions by Frivaldsky’s assistants was labelled by the name of the region (“ Macedonia ” or “Maced”, “Rumelia” or “Rumel”), and by Frivaldszky (“Friv.”), while the names of the collectors did not appear, and dates were mostly not given. Frivaldszky published the description of S. coerulans with locality “Hab. in Rumelia”. Consequently, material identified as S. coerulans by Frivaldszky prior to 1836 from Rumelia can be used for lectotypification. Four specimens labelled by Frivaldszky as being from Rumelia have been found without the collecting date (BP, PRC, W and WU), and one with the date V/1836 (W) listed, but not on the label that Frivaldszky left. An additional specimen has also been found in K, which is dated from 1837. As the date of the description of S. coerulans precedes the date written on this label, this specimen should be omitted from the typification. However, as there were expeditions to the region only in 1836 and 1841, presumably this specimen belongs with the others and was misdated. All mentioned specimens are without many leaves, but have inflorescences with the typical diagnostic characters of the species well-developed. Since the inflorescence is best preserved in both the individuals on the herbarium sheet W 0030272, and this specimen was labelled by Deyl as “Cotypus”, we designate it as lectotype.
