In our treatment of Polystichum (Kessler et al. 2018) , we chose the name P. cochleatum (Klotzsch) Hieron. over the simultaneously published P. pycnolepis (Klotzsch) T.Moore for a species occurring from Venezuela (where both types come from) to Bolivia. In doing this, we overlooked that Hooker (1862) had chosen pycnolepis over cochleatum when synonymizing the two species, making this the correct name for the species. According to the Nomenclature Code ( Turland et al. 2018), Art. 11.5 (Examples 22–24) requires that when two names have been published at the same time for the same taxon, the first author who choses one over the other is to be followed. Therefore, the species so far treated as P. cochleatum in Bolivia has to be known as:
