Cetorhinus Blainville, 1816: 121 View in CoL . Type species:not designated; Blainville included the species “ Gunneri; Peregrinus; Shavianus; Homianus?” in Cetorhinus View in CoL without further comment. Gill (1862) designated Squalus maximus “Linnaeus View in CoL ” (= Gmelin, 1789) as type of Cetorhinus View in CoL , but this was not an included species. Jordan & Gilbert (1883) designated “ Cetorhinus gunnerianus Blainv. View in CoL = S. maximus View in CoL L.” (a junior synonym of Squalus maximus Gunnerus, 1765 View in CoL ) as type of Cetorhinus View in CoL , which may be the earliest valid type designation.
