Type material. Holotype (male): CHINA: Sichuan: “CHINA—NW Sichuan 20 km W of Luhua 2750–3200 m, mixed forest 8– 28.6. 2004, leg. R. Fabbri ” ( MSC).
Paratypes: CHINA: Sichuan: same data as holotype, ♂ ( ASC); above Kalongzhen , 2760 m W bank Riv. Xiaoheishuihe Heishui Xian, Sichuan 12~ 14-VI-2001 CHINA Y. Imura leg., ♂ ( ASC) .
Diagnosis. Ocypus orodes shares most character states with O. bion and differs from it mainly by the differently shaped aedoeagus, and by a few external characters, as given in the description.
Description. Size slightly larger. Head more rounded, less distinctly wider than long (ratio 1.20), tempora behind eyes slightly, arcutely dilated before narrowed toward neck; eyes relatively larger, tempora less conspicuously longer than eyes (ratio 2.05).
Male. Sternite 8 with wide and deep, obtusely triangular medioapical emargination. Genital segment with sternite 9 similar in shape to that of O. bion , but wider with basal portion shorter and wider, and with medioapical emargination markedly wider and deeper ( Fig. 193). Tergite 10 markedly narrower, with subacute apex, setose as in Fig. 194. Aedoeagus large, long, shaped as in Figs. 195–198; median lobe narrowed into slender apical portion with subacute apex, with a pair of pigmented protuberances on face adjacent to paramere below apex (paramere removed); paramere narrow, markedly elongate, situated on median lobe asymmetricaly, with long carina on face away from median lobe, with narrowly arcuate apex not quite, or almost, reaching apex of median lobe; sensory peg setae on underside of paramere arranged into two unequally long lateral groups not quite joined anteriorly; apical setae fine, situated as in Fig. 198.
Female. Unknown.
Length 20.0 mm.
Bionomics. Little is known about the collection circumstances of the specimens of the original series. Those from near Luhuo (see comments) were taken from pitfall traps set in a mixed forest.
Geographical distribution. Ocypus orodes is at present known from two localities in northwestern Sichuan.
Recognition and comments. Ocypus orodes shares the character state of the punctation on pronotal disc being appreciably sparser than that on the head with O. bion ; it may be positively identified only by the shape of the aedoeagus.
The paratype from “above Kalongzhen” is missing all but three basal segments of the left antenna.
The correct spelling of “Luhua” is Luhuo.
Etymology. The specific epithet is the name of Orodes, - is, m, the king of the Parthians, in apposition.
