Diagnosis. Specimens of S. connata are similar in appearance to those of other members of the connata group but can be distinguished by the shape of the male genitalia ( Fig. 8p View Fig ).

Redescription. Length 1.1–1.5 mm ( Fig. 6a–c View Fig ). Head: Winged male head approximately 1.47 times ( Fig. 8d View Fig ), wingless male 1.44 times ( Fig. 8e View Fig ), female 1.49 times ( Fig. 8f View Fig ) longer than wide. Winged male eye approximately 1.48 times ( Fig. 8d View Fig ), wingless male 0.57 times ( Fig. 8e View Fig ), female 0.46 times ( Fig. 8f View Fig ) longer than temple. Winged male antennomeres 3–8 subquadrate, 9 slightly transverse, 10 transverse ( Fig. 8a View Fig ). Wingless male antennomeres 3–6 subquadrate, 7–10 transverse ( Fig. 8b View Fig ). Female antennomeres 3–5 subquadrate, 6–10 transverse ( Fig. 8c View Fig ). Thorax: Pronotum as long as wide ( Fig. 8g View Fig ). Winged male elytra approximately 1.87 times ( Fig. 8i View Fig ), wingless male 1.26 times, female 1.29 ( Fig. 8j View Fig ) longer than pronotum. Winged male meso- and metaventrites trapezoidal, approximately 1.66 times ( Fig. 8h View Fig ), wingless male 1.19 times, female 1.18 times longer than pronotum ( Fig. 8h View Fig ). Metacoxa as in Fig. 8o View Fig . Aedeagus: Apical lobe of male genitalia acute and bent to right ( Fig. 8p View Fig ). Left paramere longer than right, setae present anteriorly ( Fig. 8p View Fig ).

Type locality. Erua ( TO), New Zealand .

Distribution. Mid-part of North Island, New Zealand ( Fig. 9 View Fig , triangles).

Habitat. Most specimens were collected using flight intercept traps (FIT) and sifting leaf, log, and tree fern litter in Nothofagus and broadleaf forests. A few specimens were collected from a tree hole.

Comments. Specimens of S. connata are difficult to separate from those of other species externally, but the sizes and shapes of the antennomeres and the male genitalia are diagnostic. Insufficient evidence exists to maintain S. griseipila and S. longipennis as separate species based on comparisons of the shapes and sizes of the antennomeres. Specimens of these species have been collected at or near the type locality or localities of additional specimens of S. connata . For these reasons, we have placed S. griseipila and S. longipennis in synonymy with S. connata .
