Calicnemia hamata View in CoL sp. nov.
( Figures 1 View FIGURE 1 C; 3A–E)
Etymology. The specific name hamata is derived from Latin and means hooked in reference to the hook-shape at the tip of the flagella of the genital ligula.
Type material. Holotype: Male , Bokilhamsai , Kaew Neua Pass area, N.E. Lak Sao, Bolikhamxay Prov., C. Laos (700m), 29.IV.2002, Matti Hämäläinen leg.
Description of holotype male. Head ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A). Labrum, genea and postclypeus matte black; anteclypeus dark reddish. Mandibles yellowish. Large transverse yellow stripe runs from edge of eyes over antefrons just above postclypeus and with very irregular dorsal edge. Antennae entirely black. Dorsum of head matte black with four orange spots just posterior of antennae. Two somewhat arrow–shaped larger ones at anterolateral edge of vertex and one between each antenna and edge of eyes. Posterior side of head matte black with two yellow teardropshaped spots. Thorax. Prothorax. Anterior and posterior lobes entirely black; middle lobes black with large yellow spot dorsally and small one laterally. Synthorax matte black with three conspicuous yellow stripes as in Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 C: Narrow antehumeral stripe, broader stripe over metepisternum through spiracle, and a third formed by yellow ventral half of metepimeron. Legs. Coxae black anterior and yellow posterior. Femora, tibiae, tarsi and claws entirely black. Wings hyaline; 17–18 postnodal crossveins in both wings. Pterostigma black, covering about 1.5 underlying cells. Abdomen ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 C): S1 black with large yellow lateral spot; S2–6 reddish, but posterior 1/6th of S6 black; S7–10 entirely black. Anal appendages ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 B–C) black. Cerci slanting upward and adorned with two long basal spines directed inward and ventrally. These spines difficult to see in lateral view. Paraprocts robust, shorter than length of cerci and slightly curved inward apically. Genital ligula as shown in Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D–E: flagella short and robust, apically adorned with a hooked extension.
Measurement (mm). Abdomen including anal appendages 32; Hindwing 24.
Female. Unknown.
Diagnosis. It is probably justified to place Calicnemia hamata sp. nov. in group 1 based on the narrow lobe of its genital ligula, even if the flagella are shorter and more robust than usual for members of this group ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D–E). The new species is easily separated from other species by the hook shape at the apex of the flagella ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D–E). C. hamata sp. nov. comes closest to C. erythromelas of group 1 with respect to its body color pattern and the structure of its appendages ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 B–C & 4A–B).
A female specimen ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 D) collected from Xieng Khoang, Phonesavan Prov. in Laos and similar in pattern to both the male of C. hamata sp. nov. and the female of C. erythromelas could not be conclusively identified. Additional research is needed to clarify whether this is C. hamata sp. nov. or C. erythromelas .
