Montina fenestrata ( Stål, 1867) View in CoL

( Fig. 32 View Fig )

Aristippus fenestratus Stål, 1867: 299 (new species).

Montina (Aristippus) fenestrata: STÂL (1872) View in CoL : 74 (checklist, new generic placement, Aristippus as subgenus).

Ploeogaster fenestratus: WALKER (1873) : 94 (new generic placement).

Montina fenestrata: LETHIERRY & SEVERIN (1896) View in CoL : 195 (catalog); MALDONADO (1990): 234 (catalog).

Type locality. “Brasilia borealis” [= Northern Brazil].

Type material. HOLOTYPE. [ BRAZIL]: 1 ♀, “ Amazon ” / “Stevens” / “ fenestratus Stål ” / (red label) 382 “82” / (red label) Typus / NHRS-GULI 000000607 ( NHRS).

Diagnosis. General coloration dark grey to dark reddish brown, with head and legs light reddish-brown, membrane pale-yellow with a very conspicuous medial oval hyaline spot ( Fig. 32B View Fig ); elevation of the carina of the posterior pronotal lobe very low ( Fig. 32A View Fig ); connexivum margin nearly straight.

Differential diagnosis. Montina fenestrata is similar in coloration to M. fumosa and M. tikuna sp. nov. Nonetheless, M. fenestrata can be distinguished by the hyaline spot in the membrane, which is absent in both species, and the very low elevation of the carina of the posterior pronotal lobe ( Fig. 32A View Fig ), which is prominent in both M. fumosa ( Fig. 11E View Fig ) and M. tikuna sp. nov. ( Fig. 23C View Fig ). Since we have only examined images of the female holotype, we do not know if there is any sexual dimorphism.

Distribution. Only known from Brazil ( LEPELETIER & SERVILLE 1825, MALDONADO 1990).

Remark on type. STÂL (1867) indicated that he examined a single female from northern Brazil (“Brasilia borealis”). The holotype deposited at NHRS bears a label “Amazon”, thus being congruent with Stål’s indication.
