Ochrotrichia caatinga sp. nov.

Figs. 1A–D View FIGURES 1 A – D

Description. Holotype. Adult male. Structure typical for Ochrotrichia spp. ( Flint 1972), except body length 2.0 mm (from tip of head to ends of folded wings). Length of each forewing 1.8 mm. General color brown with thorax lighter (in alcohol). Tibial spur formula: 1-3-4. Metascutellum subpentagonal. Abdomen without visible modifications.

Male genitalia. Sternum IX quadrangular ( Fig. 1A View FIGURES 1 A – D ), covered with long setae; tergum IX with anterior margin rounded on each side and posterior margin emarginated ( Fig. 1B View FIGURES 1 A – D ). Inferior appendages long, subrectangular with dorsal margin slightly emarginate and apex round in lateral view ( Fig. 1C View FIGURES 1 A – D ), with long setae over all surface and peg-like setae on internal surface ( Fig. 1B View FIGURES 1 A – D ). Tergum X divided longitudinally into two sclerotized processes ( Fig. 1B View FIGURES 1 A – D ), left process broader, basal portion slightly sclerotized, with apex curved and acute; right process more slender, slightly curved, and with acute apex ( Fig. 1B View FIGURES 1 A – D ). Phallus tubular, elongate, and slender; basal portion broader; ejaculatory duct protruding apically; with lateral process curved and overlying ejaculatory duct; apex, in dorsal view, with small spines ( Fig. 1D View FIGURES 1 A – D ).

Female and larva stages unknown.

Remarks. Based on the elongate inferior appendages and tergum X, in dorsal view, divided into two conspicuous processes, this new species is placed in the O. aldama group. Based on the shape of the tergum X, this new species is most similar to O. insularis Mosely, 1934 . However, O. caatinga sp. nov. can be distinguished from O. insularis by the shape of the inferior appendages, subrectangular and rounded apically in lateral view; by the absence of a hook-like process on tergum X; and by the phallus having small spines on the apical area and a curved lateral process. Variation of the body length 2.0 mm– 2.2 mm (n = 10).

Etymology. The name of this species refers to the Brazilian biome Caatinga , where the specimens were collected.
