Ochrotrichia igrapiuna sp. nov.

Fig. 5A–D View FIGURES 5 A – D

Description. Holotype. Adult male. Structure typical for Ochrotrichia spp. ( Flint 1972) except body length 2.0 mm (from tip of head to end of the folded wing). Length of each forewing 1.8 mm. General color uniform brown (in alcohol). Head without modification. Tibial spur formula: 1-3-4. Metascutellum subpentagonal. Abdomen without visible modifications.

Male genitalia. Sternum IX with anterior portion excavated in lateral view; anterior margin rounded; posterior margin truncate ( Fig. 5A, 5C View FIGURES 5 A – D ); tergum IX very short forming a short transverse bar in dorsal view; posterior margin darker ( Fig. 5B View FIGURES 5 A – D ). Inferior appendages long; rectangular in lateral view with apex slightly truncate ( Fig. 5C View FIGURES 5 A – D ); distal portion slightly curved inwards and tapering in ventral view ( Fig. 5A View FIGURES 5 A – D ); with long setae over all surface and spinelike setae on internal surface ( Fig. 5A, 5C View FIGURES 5 A – D ). Segment X tergum elongate and not divided; triangular in lateral view ( Fig. 5C View FIGURES 5 A – D ); with a basal sclerotized, spine-like process on the left side in dorsal view; mesal area with an enlarged and darker area on the right side ( Fig. 5B View FIGURES 5 A – D ). Phallus tubular, very slender, and tapering to apex; without processes; ejaculatory duct not protruding ( Fig. 5D View FIGURES 5 A – D ).

Female and larva unknown.

Remarks. Ochrotrichia igrapiuna sp. nov. is tentatively placed in the O. xena group due to the overall arrangement of the genitalia, in which tergum X is a simple flap sometimes bearing a few spines. This is a very distinctive Ochrotrichia species and can be easily distinguished by the triangular shape of tergum X in lateral view and enlarged and darker area on its right side.

Etymology. This species name alludes to the type locality. The origin of the municipality name is not certain, Igrapiúna either is derived from ygara-piuna (meaning “black canoe” in Tupi language) or from ygarapé-una (meaning “small stream with black water” in Tupi-guarani language).
