Female: ovipositor long; sternite VIII twice the length of sternite VII ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 26 – 28 ).

Male. Holotype. Head. Antenna black; 4 black ocellar setae; vertex and frons black, sparse brown tomentose; face black, golden tomentose; mystax with 3 black macrosetae, remaining macrosetae yellow; palpus with yellow setae; proboscis black with yellowish setae ventrally; labial setae yellowish; occiput gray and golden tomentose; occipital setae whitish; postocular macrosetae yellow.

Thorax. Antepronotum and postpronotum black, golden tomentose; mesonotum, scutellum and pleura brown, golden tomentose. Chaetotaxy: 2 black notopleural macrosetae; 1 black supraalar macroseta; 1 yellow postalar macroseta; 3 black dorsocentral macrosetae; anatergal setae absent; pair of yellow apical scutellar macrosetae; discal scutellar setae yellowish; katatergal macrosetae yellowish; setae on meron + metanepisternum yellowish.

Wing ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ). Slightly infuscated (microtrichia), without costal dilation; bifurcation of veins R4 and R5 placed beyond apex of discal cell; crossvein r-m positioned slightly beyond middle of discal cell; microtrichia on posterior margin arranged in a single plane; halter yellow.

Legs. Fore and mid femora with basal 4/5 black, apical 1/5 brown; most of hind femur black anteriorly, except base and apex brown; femora brown posteriorly; fore and mid tibia brown; hind tibia with basal 4/5 brown and apical 1/5 black; first tarsomeres yellow, remaining tarsomeres black. Chaetotaxy: fore and mid femora with ventral yellow setae; mid femur with 4 anteroventral yellow macrosetae, 3 anterior yellow macrosetae, and 1 apical, posterodorsal, yellow macroseta; hind femur with 2 anterior yellow macrosetae, 4 anteroventral yellow macrosetae, 1 subapical, anterodorsal, black macrosetae and another one posterodorsally; fore tibia with 3 posterior black macrosetae; mid tibia with 2 posterior yellow macrosetae and 1 black macroseta; hind tibia with 2 to 3 black macrosetae and anterior yellow macrosetae.

Abdomen ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ). Tergites and sternites I–III brown, golden tomentose; tergites and sternites IV–VIII black, sparse golden tomentose, brown apically; tergites II–IV with marginal setae; sternite VIII developed, fused only basally, inner margin angular with long, yellow setae ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ).

Terminalia. Black ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ); epandrium with dorsal, subapical, internal acute projection ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ) and with a group of long golden setae apically ( Figs. 18, 20, 22 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ); gonocoxite triangular apically ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ); gonostylus rounded apically ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ); hypandrium with two ventral projections and ‘U’-shaped medio-apically ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ); ejaculatory apodeme wide and long proximally, in lateral view ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ); aedeagus with three thin and short tubes; subepandrial sclerite with a protuberance medially.

Lengths: Body 12.2 mm; wing 8.2 mm.

Holotype condition. Right antennal style, supraalar, and postalar and left apical scutellar macrosetae lost; right mid leg lost. Detached wing mounted on microslide in Canada balsam. Part of the abdomen and terminalia placed in microvial with glycerin.

Variation. Body: 11.3–13.2 mm; wing 8.0– 8.9 mm; mystax with one to eight black macrosetae, remaining yellow; one to two postalar black macrosetae; five to six black and one yellow dorsocentral macrosetae; fore femur basal 2/3 black and apical 1/3 brown; mid and hind femur mostly black, except for base and apex brown; mid and hind tibiae basal 4/5 brown and apical 1/5 black; middle femur with two yellow macrosetae; posterior femur with two yellow and one black anterior macroseta, two yellow and one black anteroventral macroseta; tergites and sternites black with brown apex.

Female. ( Figs. 26–28 View FIGURES 26 – 28 ): Similar to male except for following: body length (13.6–15.5 mm), wing (8.2–9.3 mm); mystax black in dorsal half and yellow on ventral half; one to two yellow postalar macrosetae; fore femur light brown anteriorly and with a dark brown stripe medially; mid femur basal 1/5 light brown anteriorly and dark brown to black on apical 4/5; hind femur basal 1/3 light brown anteriorly and dark brown to black on apical 2/3; fore tibia brown; mid and hind tibiae basal 4/5 brown and apical 1/5 black; mid femur with two yellow and one black macrosetae anteriorly, and three yellow and one black macrosetae anteroventrally; hind femur with three yellow and one black anteroventral macrosetae; fore tibia with two black macrosetae posteriorly; mid tibia with three yellow macrosetae posteriorly; tergites and sternites I–VII brown, golden tomentose; tergite and sternite VIII dark shining brown; ovipositor long ( Figs. 10, 12 View FIGURES 8 – 16 ); sternite VIII twice the length of sternite VII ( Figs. 26, 28 View FIGURES 26 – 28 ); median sclerite at posterior end of furca (remnant of tergite IX) absent; genital fork long with narrow arms; three oval sclerotized capsules of spermathecae ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 26 – 28 ).

Etymology. From the Latin aurata = gold, referring to the group of long and golden apical setae on epandrium ( Figs. 18, 20, 22 View FIGURES 17 – 25 ).

Distribution. Guanacaste province, Costa Rica ( Fig. 41).

Comments. The female of Martintella aurata sp. nov. can be distinguished from Martintella fernandoi sp. nov. mainly by the size of tergite and sternite VIII. In Martintella aurata sp. nov. sternite VIII is long, twice the length of sternite VII ( Figs. 26 View FIGURES 26 – 28 ), while in M. fernandoi sp. nov. sternite VIII is less than twice the length of sternite VII ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 38 – 40 ).
