11. Loxandrus lateralis Casey, 1918 View in CoL
This taxon was described from an unspecified number of specimens collected at «Sarasota, Florida ». Casey’s collection in USNM contains a single specimen under that name, a female herein selected as the lectotype, labelled «Sarasota, Fla W.S.B. Coll. 3-4. 1911 /Casey bequest 1925/Type USNM 47347 About USNM / UAIC 00044056 View Materials / lateralis Csy. [handwritten]/ lectotype Loxandrus lateralis by [handwritten] R. T. Allen» .
The lectotype (SBL ¼ 11.2 mm; ABL ¼ about 13.5 mm) is conspecific with specimens of L. saphyrinus (Chaudoir, 1843) [NEW SYNONYMY]. As pointed out by Allen (1972:128), L. saphyrinus ‘‘is very distinct.’’ It is the largest species of the genus in North America, though large specimens of a few species of the rectus and erracticus groups could reach the size range of L. saphyrinus , with a very characteristic pronotum: the sides are evenly rounded, the posterior angles widely rounded, the lateral margins explanate at base in most specimens, the lateral beads indistinct, and the anterior sulcus is not impressed medially.
