Subgenus Steganina Wheeler, 1960 View in CoL
Steganina Wheeler, 1960: 110 View in CoL .
Type species: Musca coleoptrata Scopoli, 1763 .
Diagnosis. Eye roundish, longest axis usually oblique to body axis. Frons brown to black, shiny, sometimes with sporadic minute setulae and a black band on lower part (above ptilinal fissure); frons and face rectangular in profile excluding the nigrolimbata and ornatipes species groups. Facial carina mostly narrow and distinct above, small in the coleoptrata and shirozui species groups, and absent in the nigrolimbata , ornatipes , and undulata species groups. Palpus mostly slender and yellow, sometimes large or black distally. Gena yellow, usually broad, narrow in the nigrolimbata and ornatipes groups. Mesonotum and scutellum flat, mostly brownish to black.
Description. Ocellar triangle black, with a pair of small setae above ocellar setae. Postvertical setae slightly behind vertex ridge. Fronto-orbital plate brownish yellow. Proclinate orbital setae distinctly nearer to ptilinal fissure than to inner vertical setae. Pedicel yellow to orange; first flagellomere usually with black pubescence. Face mostly brown to black on upper 2/3, yellow on lower margin. Clypeus narrow, yellow to dark brown. Vibrissa prominent; other orals small. Occiput brown. Postpronotal lobe white to yellow, with 1 or 2 longer and a few small setae. Acrostichal setulae in approximately 10 irregular rows. Pleura with 1 brownish to black longitudinal stripe above (running from propleuron to base of halter), mostly yellow below. Prescutellar setae 1 pair. Basal scutellar setae divergent; apical scutellars cruciate. Wing: brown anteriorly, paler posteriorly except at tip; basal medial-cubital crossvein present; C 1 setae 2, less differentiated; costal vein with 6–8 minute spinules on ventral surface between R 2+3 and R 4+5; R 2+3 markedly curved to costa at tip; R 4+5 and M 1 convergent distally. Halter mostly grey to brown basally. Legs: white to yellowish, dark brown at fore knee, distal 1/2 of mid and hind femora and basal 1/2 of mid and hind tibiae; fore femur distally with a row of 3–5 suberect setae on posterior surface; mid tibia with strong apical seta and 5 dumpy basal setae on dorsal surface; preapical dorsal setae present on all tibiae; mid and hind tarsomeres with 2 and 1 rows of minute, cuneiform setulae on ventral surface, respectively; fore and hind legs with first tarsomeres slightly shorter than the rest combined; mid legs with first tarsomere longer than the rest combined. Abdominal tergites usually brown to black; sternites yellow to brown, mostly broadened in width. Epandrium with setae and pubescence. Surstylus and cercus with setae.
