Neureclipsis McLachlan View in CoL

Neureclipsis McLachlan, 1864: 30 View in CoL .

Type species: Phryganea bimaculata Linnaeus, 1758 , monotypic.

Archaeoneureclipsis Ulmer, 1912: 69 ; new synonym.

Type species: † Archaeoneureclipsis † fortis Ulmer, selected by Fischer 1962: 25.

According to the generic venational characters ( Table 1) and genital architecture, the genus Archaeoneureclipsis is identical to Neureclipsis . Ulmer (1912) established the genus on the following wing characters: (1) discoidal cell in the forewings shorter than its stalk; and (2) fork 1 and fork 2 are stalked in both wings. However, there are extant Neureclipsis species with short forewing discoidal cell, e.g., N. bimaculata Linnaeus , N. crepuscularis Walker , and N. valida Walker. Moreover , the stalked condition of apical forks 1 and 2 is not stable, neither on forewings nor on hind wings. The stalk is lacking in Archaeoneureclipsis geminata Ulmer , but present at forewing fork 1 and hind wing fork 1 and fork 2 of Neureclipsis bimaculata .

Diagnosis: The spur formula is 3,4,4. The maxillary palps each have the 1st and 2nd segments much shorter than the 3rd segment; the 3rd segment is inserted subapically on the lateral face of the 2nd segment, resulting in a mesoapical lobe on segment 2. Wing venation is complete, as discussed for this diagnostic genus cluster.

Remarks: McLachlan (1864) found that the absence of crossvein c -sc in the forewings is one of the most striking distinguishing characters for this genus. However, Neboiss (1986) described a species from Australasia with crossvein c -sc present in the middle of each forewing. This small genus is mainly distributed in the Holarctic Region, and represented in the Australian Region by a single species, N. napea Neboiss. It is well represented in Baltic amber.
