Genus Turricula Schumacher, 1817

Type species. Turricula flammea Schumacher, 1817 [= Turricula javana ( Linné, 1767) ], by monotypy ( Schumacher 1817: 217). Present-day, Indo-West Pacific.

Discussion. Several Paratethyan species have been placed in the Clavatulidae genus Turricula in the literature, e.g., Turricula (Surcula) lamarckii austriae Glibert, 1960 , Turricula (Surcula) consobrina ( Bellardi, 1877) sensu Bałuk, 2003 , Turricula (Surcula) reevei buiturica (Moisescu) sensu Nikolov, 1994 , Turricula (Surcula) serrata (Hörnes) sensu Schultz, 1998 . These species should be placed in the Pseudomelatomidae Knefastia Dall, 1919 or Comitas Finlay, 1926 and are excluded herein. A revision of these species is beyond the scope of this paper, but we assume that Turricula did not occur in the Circum-Mediterranean Neogene.
