Type locality. South-west bank of Gödet River at Tilkikaya ( Turkey), Karaman Basin .

Type stratum. Silt and clay of the Týrtar Formation.

Age. Middle Miocene, late Serravallian.

Etymology. From pellis (Latin: skin) and crocodilus (Latin: crocodile), referring to the peculiar sculpture.

Diagnosis. Granulatocincta species of small size, paucispiral protoconch, spire coeloconoid, broad buccinoid profile and barrel-shaped last whorl. Finely sculptured, early whorls with sinuous axial riblets crossed by spiral cords. Later whorls with low cords of primary to tertiary strength bearing vaguely quadratic tubercles axially arranged to form sinuous riblets. Siphonal fasciole not developed. Short siphonal canal.

Description. Shell small, solid, broad buccinoid weakly coeloconoid spire; apical angle ~45–50°. Protoconch worn, but paucispiral. Teleoconch of up to eight whorls initially tall and flat-sided, later rather depressed. Early teleoconch whorls bearing close-set, sinuous axial riblets, crossed by weak spiral cords. Fourth teleoconch whorl rapidly broadening, becoming squatter, tripartite, with broad subsutural collar covered in fine spirals. In some specimens subsutural collar swollen, making spire weakly gradate. On penultimate whorl secondary weakly beaded spiral cords intercalated above and below suprasutural cord. Suture narrowly impressed, linear. Last whorl 65–70% of total height, barrel-shaped. Subsutural collar flattened or swollen, bearing close-set, narrow cords. Subsutural ramp weakly concave, bearing close-set, narrow spiral cords. One cord placed at mid-ramp, beaded, comma-shaped riblets. Shoulder hardly developed. Sculpture at mid-whorl and base consisting of flattened cords of alternating strength, tertiary threads present in some specimens, separated by narrow grooves, bearing low subquadrate tubercles. Tubercles aligned axially forming vague sinuous axial riblets; siphonal fasciole not developed. Aperture ovate; anal sinus moderately wide and deep, symmetrically U-shaped, with apex at beaded cord on ramp; siphonal canal moderately short, wide, shallowly notched at tip. Columella strongly excavated in upper third, straight below, moderately twisted to the left, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus strongly thickened, sharply delimited, forming broad callus rim and weak pseudumbilical chink.

Discussion. This species was tentatively treated as Granulatocincta sotterii ( Michelotti, 1847) by Landau et al. (2013). Granulatocincta sotterii is a common species in the Tortonian of Italy and has been frequently described and illustrated ( Montanaro 1937: 117, pl. 5, figs 2–18; Ruggieri & Davoli 1984, pl. 4, figs 1, 6, 13–14, 18–19, Davoli 1990, pl. 8, figs 2–8). These Italian specimens of G. sotterii show some variability in sculpture, but are all characterized by a prominent subsutural collar with large beads, a prominent central spiral cord of strong beads and a prominently beaded shoulder, but lack secondary and tertiary spiral cords. Thus, Granulatocincta pelliscrocodili nov. sp. differs significantly from G. sotterii in its delicate and complex sculpture. Granulatocincta callim nov. sp. differs in the same features from G. pelliscrocodili . Within Granulatocincta , this species is outstanding by its fragmented primary sculpture and reduced central spiral cord of beads.

Paleoenvironment. Inner neritic brackish water environments ( Landau et al. 2013).

Proto-Mediterranean Sea: Serravallian (middle Miocene): Karaman Basin: Akboðazi, Seyithasan, Tilkikaya ( Turkey) ( Landau et al. 2013).
