Type locality. Baden-Sooss ( Austria), Vienna Basin .

Type stratum. Silt and clay of the Baden Formation.

Age. Middle Miocene, middle Badenian (late Langhian).

Etymology. In honor of Werner E. Piller (University Graz, Austria), in recognition of his contributions on Miocene stratigraphy.

Diagnosis. Shell, medium-sized, solid, moderately broad fusiform with subsutural collar bearing small sharp tubercles. Shoulder and peribasal cords very weak or subobsolete. Strongly constricted base. Spiral sculpture almost absent.

Description. Shell medium-sized, solid, moderately broad fusiform, with moderately high, slightly gradate spire; apical angle ~39–45°. Protoconch not preserved. Teleoconch of ten whorls. Early teleoconch whorls straight-sided, with tripartite spiral sculpture; weak, beaded subsutural cord, even narrower beaded mid-whorl cord, prominent strongly beaded suprasutural cord. Sculpture changing on fourth to fifth teleoconch whorl; subsutural cord develops into prominent swollen collar bearing wide spaced, low pointed tubercles (12–14 on last whorl) placed a short distance below suture; mid-cord disappears, mid-whorl concave. Suprasutural cord covered by subsequent whorl. Spiral sculpture of delicate spiral threads on early teleoconch whorls, weakening or subobsolete on last whorl. Suture narrowly incised, weakly undulating. Last whorl ~65% of total height, broad subsutural collar bearing pointed tubercles, broad, weakly concave subsutural ramp, rounded to slightly angular shoulder. Base strongly constricted. Spiral sculpture almost absent, except for weak to subobsolete shoulder and peribasal cords and a few weak cords over base and siphonal fasciole. Siphonal fasciole moderately long, poorly delimited, with weak growth increments. Aperture moderately narrow, pyriform. Outer lip not thickened, smooth within. Anal sinus wide, deep, broadly Vshaped, with apex on most concave portion of ramp below collar. Siphonal canal moderately long, slightly recurved and bent to left, unnotched at tip. Columella strongly excavated in upper third, weakly twisted at fasciole, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus moderately thickened, adherent, forming broad callus rim.

Discussion. Megaclavatula pilleri nov. sp. is slightly reminiscent of M. laevigata ( Eichwald, 1830) , which differs in its larger size and in the presence of prominent peribasal and perifasciolar cords. Megaclavatula pilleri is reminiscent of some Perrona species, but differs from Perrona in its tripartite sculpture on early teleoconch whorls. Hoernes & Auinger (1891) and Sieber (1958a) (inter alia) confused this species with Perrona styriaca ( Hilber, 1879) . Perrona rosaliae ( Hoernes & Auinger, 1891) is larger, has the comma-shaped axial riblets on early whorls typical of the genus, has a higher spire, develops a tuberculate basal spiral cord and a U-shaped anal sinus. Perrona francisci ( Toula, 1901) is a similar species from the Serravallian of Turkey with nearly identical sculpture, but differs from M. pilleri in the much longer siphonal canal and its more slender outline (see Toula 1901: 260, pl. 8, fig. 10.; Landau et al. 2013: 284, pl. 47, figs 5–6). Moreover, Perrona francisci has a completely different early teleoconch with opisthocline ribs (see Landau et al. 2013, pl. 73, figs 8–9).

Paleoenvironment. Unknown. The occurrences in the Baden Formation in the Vienna Basin would suggest middle to outer neritic environments but shallow marine species have frequently been transported into deeper environments at the Baden-Sooss locality (own data). Occurrences in the Korneuburg and Krka basins, would rather indicate inner neritic environments (e.g., Harzhauser et al. 2002).

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Karpatian (early Miocene): Korneuburg Basin: Kleinebersdorf ( Austria) (Harzhauser 2002); Badenian (middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Baden-Sooss ( Austria) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1891), Krka Basin: Gorenja Stara vas, Ivanji dol ( Slovenia) ( Mikuž 2009);? Făget Basin: Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) ( Moisescu 1955b).
