Euphyia Hübner View in CoL (Figs 697–710)
Turner (1926) placed a group of four superficially similar species, Hydriomena trygodes Meyrick , H. crocota Turner , Camptogramma severata Guenée and C. squamulata Warren into the large European genus Euphyia . These species have been placed into the tribe Hydriomenini on the basis of genitalic characters (P. McQuillan pers. com.), even though Euphyia is a xanthorhoine genus. Further scrutiny of these species will most likely result in assignation to a different or new genus.
The eggs of the two illustrated species, one described and one undescribed, are very similar in general appearance with some minor differences. Both eggs are marked clearly on all surfaces by concave hexagonal cells with elevated, moderately broad walls. Aeropyles are conspicuous and domed with moderately large to large openings. Unlike E. nr. severata , E. severata has rough chorion with very short, pinched evenly spaced ridges whereas nr. severata has a shallowly, regularly pitted chorion. The eggs of the Nearctic species E. unangulata intermediata Guenée (Xanthorhoini) are dissimilar to these eggs providing further evidence of the incorrect placement of these species into Euphyia .
