Type material. Holotype: TURKEY: ♂, “TR—Denizli province, Çal, Küçük Çökelez Mountain, 1575 m, 38°02'48"N, 29°22'11"E, 15.IV.2014, leg. Anlaş / Holotypus ♂ Astenus gusarovi sp. n. det. S. Anlaş 2014 ” ( AZMM). Paratypes: TURKEY: 2♂, 1♀, same data as holotype; 2♂, 3♀, Denizli province, Çal, Büyük Çökelez Mountain, 38°01'31"N, 29°21'46"E, 1627 m, 15.IV.2014, leg. Anlaş & Örgel (all AZMM).

Etymology. The species is dedicated to Dr. Vladimir Gusarov, Oslo, a specialist on staphylinids.

Description. Measurements (in mm) and ratios (range, n=9): AL 0.92–0.98; HL 0.55–0.64; HW 0.67–0.73; PW 0.65–0.72; PL 0.56–0.60; EL 0.43–0.46; EW 0.70–0.75; AW 0.78–0.82; TiL 0.47–0.51; TaL 0.29–0.31; ML 0.58–0.61 (n=5); TL 3.9–4.5 HL/HW 0.82–0.88; PW/HW 0.97–0.99; PW/PL 1.16–1.20; EL/PL 0.77; EW/PW 1.04–1.08; AW/EW 1.09–1.12; TiL/TaL 1.62–1.65.

Habitus as in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 8 . Coloration: head and pronotum reddish brown, elytra yellowish brown, with area near scutellum, anterior margin, and anterior part of lateral margin infuscate, abdomen dark brown, antennae rufous, legs reddish brown.

Head transverse (see Figs. 1–2 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ); dorsal surface distinctly convex; with very dense and coarse punctation; microsculpture indistinct; pubescence short and yellowish. Eyes relatively small and weakly prominent, in dorsal view temples longer than eyes. Antennae moderately slender, antennomere III approximately 2.1 times as long as wide; antennomeres V–X slightly oblong ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ).

Pronotum transverse and slightly narrower than head (see Figs. 1–2 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ); widest at anterior angles, distinctly narrowed posteriorly; anterior and posterior angles each with a long seta of little more than half length of lateral margin of pronotum; posterior margin convex; dorsal surface with slightly pronounced impressions; microsculpture almost absent; punctation similar to that of head, but denser, surface somewhat glossier than that of head; pubescence of similar length as that of head, but less fine and more conspicuous.

Elytra transversely rectangular and short, slightly wider than pronotum (see ratios and Figs. 1–2 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ); microsculpture absent; punctation very dense and distinctly granulose, interstices narrower than diameter of punctures; pubescence yellowish, more distinct than that of head and pronotum; posterior margin with several dark brown setae, the longest near posterior angles. Hind wings totally reduced.

Abdomen slightly wider than elytra (see Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ), widest at segment V, segments III–VI moderately transverse, tergites III–V approximately twice as wide as long; punctation very dense and very fine; interstices with distinct microsculpture; pubescence yellowish; posterior margin of tergite VII with palisade fringe.

Male: sternite VII in posterior median area slightly depressed and with some modified dark stout setae, posterior margin weakly concave ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ); sternite VIII deeply and acutely incised at posterior margin, pubescence unmodified ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 8 ); aedeagus as in Figs. 6–8 View FIGURES 1 – 8 and 33 View FIGURES 33 – 38 .

Comparative notes. The species is distinguished from all its consubgeners by the male sexual characters, especially by the morphology of the aedeagus. In addition, the new species differs from the seven Turkish species described previously by a different coloration:

In A. bicoloratus Assing, 2002 (Ordu) View in CoL : head and pronotum dark brown, anterior 2/3 of elytra blackish, posterior 1/3 of elytra yellow, abdomen blackish with posterior margins of anterior tergites and apex lighter ( Assing 2002); in A. brachati Assing, 2011 (Bursa) View in CoL : body blackish, with posterior margins of elytra narrowly yellowish ( Assing 2011); in A. occiduus Assing, 2007 (Denizli) View in CoL : forebody blackish, with posterior 1/4–1/3 of elytra yellow, abdomen blackish with narrow posterior margins of tergites and apex somewhat paler ( Assing 2007); in A. paphlagonicus Assing, 2002 View in CoL (Kastamonu, Bolu): head, pronotum, and anterior half of elytra dark brown, posterior half of elytra yellow, abdomen dark brown with posterior margins of tergites and apex slightly lighter ( Assing 2002); in A. sexsetosus Assing, 2002 (Kayseri) View in CoL : head, pronotum, and abdomen, except for the lighter posterior tergal margins, blackish brown, elytra yellow, with area near scutellum, anterior margin, and anterior part of lateral margin more or less infuscate ( Assing 2002); in A. sultanicus Assing, 2010 View in CoL (Afyonkarahisar, Konya): head, pronotum, and abdomen blackish, with posterior margins of abdominal segments narrowly reddish; elytra yellowish, with anterior margin and scutellar area narrowly, diffusely, and weakly infuscate ( Assing 2010); in Astenus sandiklicus Anlaş, 2014 (Afyonkarahisar) View in CoL : head, pronotum and elytra reddish brown, abdomen blackish brown with narrow posterior margins of tergites and apex somewhat paler ( Anlaş 2014).

Distribution and bionomics. The new species was collected in two localities in the Çökelez Mountain, in Denizli province, in grassland at an altitude of about 1600 m. The specimens were found in the nests of Tetramorium sp. ( Hymenoptera : Formicidae : Myrmicinae), which confirms previous observations that myrmecophilous Eurysunius is exclusively associated with Tetramorium ( Assing 2002, 2007, 2010, 2011).
