18. Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari View in CoL *
Cryphalus hampei Ferrari, 1867: 11 View in CoL .
Distribution: A species of African origin ( Wood 1977), but now found throughout the tropics wherever coffee is grown. New to Taiwan. [6]
New records: Kaohsiung, ex imported coffee seeds, 22.i.2007 (Y. Y. Chung) (2); Tainan, Don Shan, coffee berry, 24.i.2007, (Y. Y. Chung) (2); as previous except: 31.i.2007 (M. Y. Lin) (8); Taitung, Li Jia , 420m, 9.iv.2007 (L. Y. Liu) (1) .
Hosts: Attacks developing fruits and fallen berries and seeds of Coffea spp. (Rubiaceae) .
Biology: The basic biology is described by Browne (1961), Schedl (1961) and others. The ‘coffee berry borer’ (CBB) is a major pest of coffee in many countries, and there is a very extensive literature concerning its economic importance and control. Damon (2000) provides a recent review of biology and control methods. The species has probably been recently introduced to Taiwan, but it is now established in coffee plantations in at least two counties.
