36. Dryocoetes hectographus Reitter View in CoL
Dryocoetes hectographus Reitter, 1913: 76 View in CoL .
Ozopemon ater Eggers, 1933: 101 View in CoL . n. syn.
Dryocoetes formosanus Nobuchi, 1967: 18 View in CoL . n. syn.
Distribution: Throughout the northern part of the Palaearctic region from France through northern and central Europe, Russia and China to Sakhalin I. Recorded from Taiwan only as D.formosanus ( Nobuchi 1967) . [2b] Hosts: Attacking especially Picea , but also Abies , Larix , Pinus (Pinaceae) . Recorded from ‘Niitaka spruce’ ( Picea sp. ) in Taiwan.
Biology: The gallery system and biology are described by Chararas (1962). Ophiostomatoid (‘blue-stain’) fungi associated with the species in Japan are described by Ohtaka et al. (2002).
Taxonomy: We have examined syntypes of D. hectographus (NHMB) , a syntype of O.ater (MIZW) , and the holotype and a paratype of D. formosanus (NIAS) , and specimens identified as D. hectographus from Europe, Russia and Japan in NHML and RAB, and D. formosanus from China in RAB. Only a single species is represented, which is very variable in size. The syntype of O. ater is almost identical with the types of D. formosanus , except in colouration (the types of D. formosanus are immature), and agrees very well with specimens from China in RAB. These represent the largest individuals of the series. Specimens from Europe, Russia and Japan are generally smaller, but otherwise agree, and there is no clear size gap between them and the larger series. Accordingly, we synonymise O. ater and D. formosanus with D. hectographus .
