For many years, Rhipicephalus lunulatus was confused with Rhipicephalus tricuspis until Walker et al. (1988) definitively reinstated this species. Thereafter, Walker et al. (1995) described Rhipicephalus interventus , a tick with morphological characters that appear to be intermediate between those of Rhipicephalus lunulatus and Rhipicephalus tricuspis . Consequently, Walker et al. (2000) cautioned that several records of Rhipicephalus lunulatus may yet be confused with Rhipicephalus interventus or Rhipicephalus tricuspis . Records of this tick published prior to the study of Walker et al. (2000) were not included in this analysis.
Oddly, Kolonin (2009) presented a geographic distribution of Rhipicephalus lunulatus broader than that in Walker et al. (2000), while using references that are not unlike those in Walker et al. (2000).
