Peirates spinipes Serville, 1831

Original data: “Du Sénégal ” ( Serville 1831: 216).

Type: Syntype 1 ♀: “ TYPE ” // “ Senegal Guerin” // “ LESTOMERUS . Amyot spinipes Serv. - Am. Serv. 323. - SENEGAL ” ( Fig. 45 View FIGURE 45 ) .

Type locality: Sénégal [ Senegal] .

Current status: Lestomerus spinipes ( Serville, 1831) ; the type species of Lestomerus Amyot & Serville, 1843 by subsequent designation ( Oshanin 1912: 52); see also Putshkov & Putshkov (1996).

Remarks: As Serville (1831) neither designate a holotype nor mentioned the number of specimens he studied, the specimen is to be treated as a syntype ( ICZN 1999, Recommendation 73F). The disk label with the handwritten information “ Senegal Guerin” is its only original label. It gives the locality ( Senegal) and “Guerin” should be read “Guérin” which is, before 1836, the correct spelling for Guérin-Méneville (1799–1874) (in 1836, he changed his name back to his birthname). In MNHN, several type specimens—in particular in Diptera and Hymenoptera—bear exactly same handwritten disk label “ Senegal Guerin”. For these type specimens, the MNHN database indicates Guérin as the collector, but to our knowledge Guérin-Méneville did not collect himself in Senegal; probably he had in this country one or several collector associates sending him material. Obviously, the other labels have been added long after the description, in particular the red type label. The large label lined with black refers to the classification of Amyot & Serville (1843); it is typical of the labels realized in MNHN for the general collection of Heteroptera which was arranged during the second half of the 19th century according to this classification.
