Type locality. Bay of Bengalis ( Hansen 1910).

Record from Thailand. South-eastern Andaman Sea, next to Phuket Island ( Fukuoka & Murano 2002).

Habitat and depth range. Marine, depth: 19–75 m ( Fukuoka & Murano 2002) .

Distribution. This species is distributed from India ( Hansen 1910), Sri Lanka to New Guinea ( Zimmer 1915), off Taiwan ( Zimmer 1918), Andaman Sea (W.M. Tattersall 1922; Pillai 1973; Fukuoka & Murano 2002; Panampunnayil 2002), Philippines (W.M. Tattersall 1951), South China Sea, Indonesia ( Ii 1964), Strait of Malacca (O.S. Tattersall 1965), Australia ( Băcescu & Udrescu 1982; Hanamura 1998; Lowry & Stoddart 2003), Enewetak Lagoon, Micronesia ( Murano 1983), Japan ( Fukuoka & Murano 1997), East China Sea ( Wang & Liu 1997), Bahrain (Arabian Gulf) ( Grabe et al. 2004) to Malaysia ( Zalina & Othman 1994; Gan et al. 2010; Tan & Azman 2018).

Remarks. The morphology of H. bengalensis is very close to H. uthupus , however, both of these species can be distinguished based on the following characteristics; in H. bengalensis , (1) the rostrum is acutely pointed, (2) the exopod of the third pleopod of the male with four articles and the first two segments are subequal and (3) the exopod of the fourth and fifth pleopods of male with three articles; while in H. uthupus , (1) the rostrum is subacute and rounded at the apex, (2) the exopod of the third pleopod of the male with five articles and the first article is longer than the second article, and (3) the exopod of the fourth and fifth pleopods of male with two articles ( Panampunnayil 1997; Hanamura 1998).
