Type locality. ‘In Mari omni’.

Vouchers. HEC 14641 View Materials (zF), 19 September 2001, Gravier   ; HEC 14839 View Materials , 27 September 2001, Port Sud-Est   (s.s. 17).

Ecology. Locally common on sand-covered rocky substratum in the upper intertidal zone ( HEC 14641 View Materials ); on dead shells and coral debris on silty sand along the beach in the lower part of the intertidal zone; exposed at low tide ( HEC 14839 View Materials ).

Distribution. Andaman Islands, Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia (Java), Yemen, Kuwait, Laccadives, Malaysia, Pakistan, Rodrigues ( Dickie, 1877a: 7), Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka.

Note. Our material agrees very well with the description and illustrations of Bliding (1963). Our specimens are relatively narrow (maximum 2 mm wide), but

do show marked constrictions.

General remarks on the distribution of Enteromorpha   in the Mascarene Islands

Seven Enteromorpha species   have been recorded from Mauritius: E. clathrata   , E. compressa (Linnaeus) Nees   , E. flexuosa   , E. prolifera (O. F. Müller) J. Agardh   (~ E. compressa (Linnaeus) Nees var. prolifera (O. F. Müller) Greville   ) ( Børgesen, 1940: 8–10), E. muscoides   (~ E. ramulosa   (J. E. Smith) Carmichael) ( Børgesen, 1946: 8), E. kylinii Bliding   , E. linza (Linnaeus) J. Agardh   ( Jagtap, 1993: table I). Two species, E. muscoides   (~ E. crinita Nees   ) and E. prolifera   , were also recorded from Réunion, by Jadin (1935: 154) and Montagne and Millardet (1862: 4), respectively. E. muscoides   (~ E. ramulosa   ) and E. compressa   have previously been reported from Rodrigues by Dickie (1877a) but were not found in our collections.
