Herrera criqualicae ( Boulard, 1986a) View in CoL n. comb.
Carineta criqualicae Boulard 1986a: 423 View in CoL . (On Alice Creek, Saut Anali, French Guiana)
REMARKS. While trying to identify the new species of Carineta and Herrera for this study, I found a problem with the generic assignment of Carineta criqualicae . The species was described in the genus Carineta but Boulard (1986a) lists (and specimens in my possession confirm) that the head (6 mm) is wider than the mesonotum (5.8 mm). A head as wide as or wider than the mesonotum is characteristic of species of the genus Herrera while the head is not as wide as the mesonotum in species of Carineta (see above). The lateral pronotum is not strongly angled mediad in this species as in species of Carineta . Boulard (1986a) also commented on the large vertex, another characteristic of Herrera and not Carineta . Therefore, based on the head being wider than the mesonotum, the large vertex and the shape of the prothorax, the species is reassigned to Herrera to become Herrera criqualicae ( Boulard, 1986a) n. comb.
DISTRIBUTION. The species has been recorded from French Guiana ( Sanborn 2013; 2011a).
