Carineta ensifera View in CoL n. sp.

( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 )

TYPE MATERIAL. Holotype. ““ BOLIVIA: Santa Cruz, 3.7 km / SSE Buena Vista, Hotel Flora / & Fauna Hotel , 430m, 5–15– X– / 2001, coll. M.C. Thomas / tropical transition forest, BLT” male ( FSCA).

REMARKS. This species is very similar in general appearance as a large unmarked species of Carineta that is similar to C. aratayensis Boulard, 1986a , C. cyrili Champanhet, 1999 , C. doxiptera , C. gemella , C. hamata n. sp., C. socia , and C. viridicata but differs in the claspers. The male operculum and fore femoral spines are also distinctive from the similar C. hamata n. sp. that was collected in the same locality. The coloration is similar to C. rufescens ( Fabricius, 1803) but lacks the pair of piceous spots on the pronotum and the more triangular head of that species.

ETYMOLOGY. The name is in reference to the thoracic markings of the species (L., ensifera , sword-bearing).

DESCRIPTION. Ground color ferruginous.

Head. Head not as wide as mesonotum, ground color without markings. Ocelli rosaceous and ochraceous. Eyes castaneous. Head covered with silvery pile, longer posterior to eye, dense, long, piceous pile between ocelli, extending laterally while decreasing in density to anteromedial eye continuing on anterolateral vertex anterior to eye and terminating on supra-antennal plate. Ventral head ground color with castaneous medial transverse ridges and on margin of central sulcus, covered with very dense, long silvery pile. Postclypeus ground color, centrally sulcate from anterior to posteroventral margin to around apex, with ten transverse ridges, long silvery pile on lateral margin, long piceous pile radiating from dorsal surface, long golden pile radiating from ventral surface. Anteclypeus ground color with longs silvery pile, radiating long golden pile. Mentum ground color, labium ground color with lateral piceous fascia on distal quarter, reaching to middle of hind coxae. Scape and pedicel ground color, antennal flagellae piceous.

Thorax. Dorsal thorax ground color. Pronotum with white pubescence anteriorly between paramedian and lateral fissure, covered with and radiating golden pile. Pronotal collar ground color with piceous posterior margin on pronotal collar lateral angle, radiating golden pile. Mesonotum ground color, mottling within submedian and lateral sigillae where muscles attach internally, with radiating golden pile. Metanotum ground color. Long golden pile between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, long silvery pile posterior to anterior arms of cruciform elevation, on lateral mesothorax, posterior mesothorax, within and radiating from posterior wing groove, and on lateral metanotum. Ventral thoracic segments ground color except light castaneous basisternum 2, trochantin 2, medial meron 2, medial episternum 2 and trochantin 3, covered with long and short silvery pile.

Wings. Fore wing and wings hyaline, slight bronzing in distal fore wing. Venation ground color except for piceous spot at base and piceous anal vein 2 + 3. Basal cell hyaline, slightly clouded at base and along radius & subcostal vein, pterostigma present, lines of infuscation in apical cells and on marginal area of fore wings, basal membrane of fore wing grayish. Hind wing venation ground color with piceous spot at base. Anal cell 3 and anal cell 2 along anal veins 2 and 3, anal cell 1 along anal vein 2 grayish.

Legs. Legs ground color, lateral and distal coxae castaneous, distal tibiae margined with castaneous, pretarsal claws ground color at base becoming castaneous with piceous tips. Fore femora proximal spine largest, angled to greatest degree, secondary spine upright slightly larger than tertiary spine, tertiary spine slightly angled with curved tip, all spines castaneous with piceous bases and tips, very small piceous apical spine. Tibial spurs and combs castaneous with piceous tips. Legs with long silvery pile on coxae, radiating long golden pile on remaining segments.

Operculum. Male operculum ground color with dark base, covered with long golden pile also radiating from margin, lateral margin short, straight, angled slightly mediad, rounded posterolateral and posterior margin, acutely angled medial margin, not meeting medially extending slightly mediad of medial meracanthus, barely covering tympanum reaching to anterior of sternite II, domed laterally. Meracanthus broadly triangular, pointed with curved lateral margin, ground color with dark base, reaching medial opercular margin.

Abdomen. Abdomen tergites ground color, tergites covered with golden pile, long silvery pile surrounding timbal cavity, long golden pile radiating from auditory capsule. Timbal exposed, white with castaneous ribs, six long ribs and five intercalary ribs. Male sternites ground color with piceous posterior margin of sternites III–VI, sternite VIII with curved notch posteriorly, long golden pile radiating from sternites, epipleurites ground color with golden pile.

Genitalia. Male pygofer ground color, lateral margin of basal lobes margined with castaneous, castaneous spot on base of upper pygofer lobe, extreme tip of dorsal beak piceous. Dorsal beak narrow, not twice as long as piceous anal styles. Pygofer basal lobe curved mediad, with rounded apex radiating dense golden pile. Upper pygofer lobes elongated, flattened, bent at approximate right angle near base, with dense long golden pile. Claspers short, finger-like with rounded terminus. Basal lobe appendage flattened, crossing across midline, curved with pointed tip. Aedeagus tubular, castaneous.

Female is unknown.

MEASUREMENTS (MM). N = 1 male. Length of body: 25.25; length of fore wing: 33.4; width of fore wing: 12.0; length of head: 4.1; width of head including eyes: 7.75; width of pronotum including suprahumeral plates: 11.85; width of mesonotum: 9.4.

DIAGNOSIS. This new species is very similar to a group of species that are of similar size and general morphology including C. aratayensis , C. cyrili , C. doxiptera , C. ensifera n. sp., C. gemella , C. hamata n. sp., C. socia , and C. viridicata . Carineta lichiana Boulard, 1986a and C. modesta Sanborn 2011a are smaller versions with a similar appearance. It can be distinguished from C. socia and C. viridicata by the lack of bronzing of the distal fore wings and fore wing apical cells in these species containing only longitudinal lines. Carineta cyrili , C. doxiptera and C. gemella have dark bronzing in the distal fore wings rather than the light bronzing characteristic of and C. ensifera n. sp. The fore wing bronzing is similar to C. aratayensis and C. hamata n. sp. but this new species has different genitalia and the shape of the male and female opercula has a rounded in C. hamata n. sp. rather than the tapered medial margin of this new species.

DISTRIBUTION. The species is known only from the holotype collected near Buena Vista.
