Tympanoterpes bergi Distant 1892a: 61 View in CoL . ( Argentina)

REMARKS. There has been confusion with respect to recognizing the taxa P. bergi and P. bufo Distant, 1905d . There are only slight differences in the morphology of the two species and Torres (1961) was the last to synonymize them. However, Sanborn & Heath (2014) determined there is a geographical separation between P. bergi and P. bufo . Specimens of P. bufo were found to have a southern and eastern distribution within Argentina and P. bergi was found in the northern and western parts of the country. Based on the distribution of the two species in Argentina, it is more likely that the specimens from Bolivia cited by Distant (1905d) and Jacobi (1907) (who notes differences in his specimens from P. bergi and identifies western Argentine localities for the species) are actually P. bergi rather than P. bufo . Therefore, I consider the specimens of P. bufo recorded from Bolivia to be P. bergi and add P. bergi to the list of Bolivian cicadas here.

The species is unicolorous dark brown with an abdomen that slightly expands laterally to segment 5 before curving to the terminus. No other Bolivian species has this coloration or abdominal shape.

DISTRIBUTION. The species has been reported previously from Argentina and Colombia ( Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2013; Sanborn & Heath 2014) but the Colombian records were shown to be erroneous ( Sanborn & Heath 2014). Distant (1906a) did not provide specific locality data for Bolivia.
