Type:— Cephalaria alpina (L.) Roemer & Schultes (1818: 43).
Annual or perennial herbs, stem simple or sparingly branched with few capitula. Leaves simple, pinnatisect to pinnatipartite or lyrate, glabrous or with loosely appressed hairs, serrate at the margins. Capitula globose to ovoid. Involucral bracts ovate, obtuse to acute at apex. Receptacular bracts triangular, acute to acuminate, dark brown above; angular teeth of outer calyx longer, intermediate teeth usually smaller, sometimes all teeth nearly equal or obsolete. Calyx cupuliform, dark green, pubescent, with irregular teeth. Corolla often yellow, pubescent outside, radial. Stamens extrorse. Involucel tetrahedral, pubescent, with eight irregular to regular teeth.
Distribution: —The members of Cephalaria sect. Atrocephalae are distributed in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, N Iraq, Syria, Turkmenistan, Turkey and S Europe.
Chromosome numbers: —The base chromosome number is x = 9 in all species of the section ( Verlaque 1980).
