Agyrtodes tasmanicus Zwick View in CoL
(Figs. 8, 45, 65, 86, 100)
Agyrtodes tasmanicus Zwick 1979: 8 View in CoL . Holotype: male, labeled ‘‘Strahan,
Tasmania, in moss and lichens, Lea and Carter’ ’ ( SAM) . Paratype: female,
identical label data. (SAM).
Distribution. Throughout Tasmania ( Fig. 100 View Fig ). Material examined listed in Appendix 1.
Diagnosis. This species can be recognized by its elongate, narrow body shape in dorsal view, its dark brown pronotal color patch, and elytra with longitudinal impressions. Australian species of similar appearance are A. atropos (found mainly in Victoria; much smaller than A. tasmanicus , with more compact antennae and much shorter median lobe) and A. eucalypti (found mainly near ACT, larger body, broadly rounded body shape, much more convex elytra and pronotum).
Redescription. TBL 5 2.4 mm, EW 5 1.2 mm, PNW 5 1.1 mm, HW 5 0.4 mm. (TBL variation: 2.3–2.5 mm)
Body long, narrow-sided, dorsum entirely medium to dark reddish-brown with vaguely defined darker regions at elytral and pronotal discs; pronotal dark patch almost always split longitudinally. Meso- and metathoracic ventrites dark brown, pronotal hypomeron and legs lighter reddish-brown. Color pattern slightly variable, older or faded specimens sometimes lighter brown, not reddish; pronotal dark patch sometimes accompanied by paired small round dark spots anteriomedially.
Head reddish-brown, broad, shining, finely punctate, with loose vestiture of long, curved golden setae. Eyes large, hemispherical. Epistomal suture present, with pronounced stem. Clypeus narrow, barely transverse, bluntly trapezoidal to oval; labrum transverse with deep median notch. Mandibles normal; maxillae with narrow, membranous galea with weak apical brush, broad lacinia with wellsclerotized, compact spore-brush, small patch of spatulate sensillae at base of lacinia. Maxillary palpi with penultimate segment longer than wide, wider than apical segment; apical segment slender, short, fusiform, with bluntly attenuate apex. Labium with four short, pointed digitiform sensillae located medially on distal margin of ligula; labial palpi two-segmented, terminal segments 3 3 as long as penultimate segment, constricted at middle, bearing large clusters of spatulate or truncate sensillae on exterior faces. Antennae ( Fig. 45 View Figs ) very long, extending to hind margin of pronotum; segments 1–6, 8 light brown, segments 7, 9–11 dark reddish brown. Segments 1 and 2 expanded, 2 wider than 1; segments 3–6 subequal in length, all slender, cylindrical, at least 3 3 as long as wide, segment 6 very slightly wider and shorted than segment 3. Segment 7 narrow basally, expanded distally; segment 8 elongate (,1.5 3 as long as wide), approximately as wide as segment 1, broader than 3–6 but half as wide as 9–11. Segment 9 robust, elongate; segment 10 less conspicuously elongate, with same trapezoidal, apically expanded shape as 9; 11 ovoid, bluntly pointed apically.
Pronotum short, convex, shining, clothed with dense vestiture of medium-long golden hairs. Anterior margin gently trilobed, dark and transparent, tightly wrapping head in repose; hind margin dark, transparent, hind angles blunt, weakly curved, not produced posteriad.
Elytra entirely reddish-brown, narrow, convex, uniformly clothed with long dark-golden hairs; faintly impressed longitudinal striae present, transverse strigae shallow but distinct. Elytral apices trangular, pointed. Scutellum reddish brown, of similar color to elytral bases.
Prosternum short; hypomeron strongly concave posteriorly, weakly concave anteriorly. Procoxal cavities large, globular. Mesosternal carina low, effaced anteriorly. Mesocoxal cavities oval. Mesipemera broad, bluntly square at coxal articulation. metepisternarectangular, elongate, slightly concave. Abdominal sterna normal, male sternum VII with broad, deep distal notch, sternum VIII short, almost completely notched medially.
Legs with femora comparatively slender, all segments covered with long, fine golden vestiture. Male protarsi with first three segments broadly expanded; segment 1 very slightly wider than tibial apex, segments 2 and 3 successively less expanded, all three bearing desnse pads of tenent setae. Male mesotarsi not expanded; claws in both sexes simple.
Male genital segment ( Fig. 65 View Figs ) elongate, narrow, laterally compressed, with anterior apophysis long, slender at base, expanded and spoon-shaped apically. Aedeagus ( Fig. 85 View Figs ) with median lobe long, slender, parallel-sided in basal half, deflexed posteriodorsad at apex; apex abruptly narrowed, bluntly lobed. Parameres extremely short, not extending past apex of median lobe, weakly expanded apically into rounded, paddlelike shape with a loose cluster of mediumlong stiff setae on each internal face. Endophallus (in repose) armed distally with large patch of small, weakly sclerotized spines, proximally with small, sclerotized teeth. Female terminalia with styli elongate, connate at base, coxite,4 3 length, 3 3 width of stylus and bearing 3–4 long, curling setae; stylus with a single large terminal seta subequal in length to coxite.
Natural History. Collected via pyrethrum fogging of logs, roots, and tree ferns, flight intercept traps, malaise traps, and on polypores.
