Agyrtodes View in CoL hunuensis (Broun)

(Figs. 20, 57, 77, 97, 103)

Choleva hunuense Broun 1893: 1434 View in CoL . Four syntypes: one male, one female, labeled

‘‘N. Zealand (Broun) 95-215/ Choleva View in CoL hunuensis ’’ (BMNH); two females

labeled ‘‘Hunua maketu co-type, 2490, T. Broun Collection, A. E. Brookes

Collection’’ (NZAC).

Agyrtodes View in CoL hunuensis (Broun). Jeannel (1936: 108) [transferred to Agyrtodes View in CoL ];

Szymczakowski (1966: 574).

Distribution. New Zealand: north-central North Island, Hunua and Waitakere Ranges south to Taupo region ( Fig. 103 View Fig ). Material examined listed in Appendix 1.

Diagnosis. Agyrtodes hunuensis can be distinguished from the sympatric A. monticola by the absence of the epistomal suture, the shape of antennal segment 8 (elongate and cylindrical in A. hunuensis, subquadrate to globular in A. monticola ), and by the shape of the apices of the aedeagal parameres (broadly rounded with many long hairs in A. hunuensis, tapered and oar-shaped in A. monticola ).

Redescription. TBL 5 2.5 mm, EW 5 1.4 mm, PNW 5 1.25 mm, HW 5 0.5 mm. (TBL variation: 2.4–2.5 mm)

Body of medium size, oval and subtly tapering posteriorly, dorsum uniformly brown with pale vestiture (Fig. 20). Head broad, rounded posteriorly, eyes hemispherical, weakly produced, strongly emarginate behind. Epistomal suture absent. Maxilla with short, slender, hyaline galea bearing pointed apical brush of minute setae, lacinia broad, robust, with wide apical spore-brush of minute, closely packed curved spines. Maxillary palpi with apical segment acuminate, acutely pointed at apex, very sparsely setose; penultimate segment narrowed basally, slightly narrower than terminal segment at apex. Labium with four short, pointed digitiform sensillae, two medially on anterior margin of ligula and two laterally, submarginal. Labial palpi with terminal segment short, stout, broad at base and bending abruptly interiad to a weakly tapering, blunt apex; terminal segments bearing sparse array of minute hairs, without digitiform sensillae. Penultimate segment short, transverse, cylindrical, with a single small, curved seta inserted ventrally on anterior margin. Antennae ( Fig. 57 View Figs ) long, slender, light brown at base, gradually darkening towards medium reddish-brown apex. Segments 1 and 2 expanded, cylindrical with constricted bases, 2 medially dilated, broader than 1. Segments 3–6 elongate, of unequal sizes; 3 slender, narrowed basally, 4 as long as 3, cylindrical, 5 broadly cylindrical, longer than 3, 4 and 6; 6 short, subequal to 4. Segment 7 longer than any preceding segment, faintly expanded at apex; segment 8 large, cylindrical, nearly twice as long as wide, scarcely constricted, slightly shorter and broader than 6. Segment 9 expanded apically, subequal to 7 in width, very slightly shorter, wider basally. Segment 10 equal to 9 in width, shorter; segment 11 long, narrowly ovate, square at base, with weakly produced, bluntly pointed apex.

Pronotum short, transverse, strongly convex; lateral margins weakly curved. Integument shining, shallowly punctate at setal insertions. Hind angles nearly square, faintly produced posteriad. Posterior margin transparent.

Elytra narrow, well over three times as long as wide, strongly convex at base, acutely pointed posteriorly; vestiture of long, semirecumbent reddish-gold setae. Transverse strigae shallowly but distinctly impressed, closely and evenly spaced; discal region without traces of longitudinal strial impressions. Scutellum of same color as elytra, with sparse vestiture and shallow punctures.

Hypomeron concave posterior to coxal insertions; hypomeron and epipleura lighter reddish-brown than dorsum and meso- and metasterna. Prosternum with narrow, elevated carina at coxal separation. Mesosternum with median carina low, smoothly curved in lateral view, highest at mesocoxal separation. Mespimera subrectangular, longer than wide, bluntly square atcoxal articulation. Metasternum setose and weakly convex medially, flattened and finely strigulose laterally. Metepisterna long, narrow, square anteriorly and tapering to blunt point posteriorly.

Abdomen narrow, sterna III–VI normal; males with sternum VII complete (not emarginate), sternum VIII almost completely cleft medially, connate only at anterior margin.

Legs of normal proportions and armature; mesotibiae elongate and slender, longer than mesofemora. Males with protarsomeres 1–3 broadly dilated, cordate, with thick pads of tenent setae, segment 1 as wide as protibial apex. Male mesotarsi not dilated, without tenent setae. Claws and female tarsi simple.

Male genital segment ( Fig. 77 View Figs ) short, broad, pleurites roundly pointed and setose only at apical margins; anterior apophysis long, constricted at base, apically expanded, spoon-shaped. Aedeagus ( Fig. 97 View Figs ) with median lobe short, flattened, bluntly pointed at apex; basal piece as long as penis, with median constriction. Parameres extending well past apex of median lobe, with round, broadly expanded, paddle-shaped apices. Interior face of each paramere bearing a large patch of greatly elongate, weakly curling setae interspersed with shorter spines. Endophallus armed with 2–3 long, pointed sclerites and a long, dense patch of minute setae and short spines. Female terminalia not examined.

Natural History. Collected in malaise and window traps in scrubland and podocarp forests.
