Comments. C. mendax was described by Lynch Arribalzaga in 1892 published in the Boletin of the National Academy of Cordoba, Argentina. The type material comes from Buenos Aires and Santa Fe Provinces, the sites were not specified. This type material in Argentina is lost.

C. mendax View in CoL was considered nomen dubium by Spies & Reiss (1996) probably on the basis of Edwards (1931) who didn’t agree with the specimens deposited in the British Museum. The only difference Edwards mentioned is the greenish color of the femora of chilean specimen instead of yellowish pale of argentinian one. It may be possible the kind of fixation of the material that changed the color or may be not the same species.

The new material here described agrees exactly with Lynch Arribalzaga's description confirming the validity of the species, here the species is redescribed using this new material and in consequence a neotype is designated.

Diagnostic characters. Males of C. mendax can be distinguished from other Coelotanypus species by having thorax with three brown yellowish bands; wings clear, only cross vein r-m darkened, cubital fork sessil. Abdomen pale yellowish with anterior dark bands on segments III–VI, segments VII,VIII all darkened; all legs yellow, except distal part of fore Ti and ta1 brownish, last four tarsi all brownish, distal part of mid and hind ta 1,2 brownish, last three tarsi all brownish. Total length 4.45. AR 0.41. VR 0.92. LR (PI) 0.70, (PII) 0.62, (PIII) 0.66. Thorax with about 38–45 dorsocentrals in three rows. HR 2.29. HV 4.26.

Material examined. Neotype male. ARGENTINA, Gualeguaychu , Entre Rios (33°00´29’’S and 58°32’54’’W), 20.ii.1986, light trap, Spinelli col. ( MLP) GoogleMaps . Paratypes: 1 adult male, same data as Neotype ( MLP) GoogleMaps ; 1 adult male, M.B. Gonnet, La Plata , Buenos Aires (34°52’43’’S and 58°02’02’’ W), 25.ii. 2009, light trap, Paggi col. ( ILPLA) GoogleMaps .

Redescription ( Figs 14–16 View FIGURES 14–16 ).

Male (n =3 except when otherwise stated)

Total length 4.03–4.75, 4.45; wing length 1.81–2.31,2.13; total length / wing length 1.94–2.23, 2.10; wing length/ length of profemur 2.13–2.24,2.18.

Coloration: General coloration uniformly brown yellowish, green in life. Wing hyaline with yellow veins only cross-vein r-m dark brown infuscated ( Fig. 14 View FIGURES 14–16 ). All legs with femur yellow, distal part of fore Ti brownish, mid and mostly all hind Ti yellow, fore leg with distal part of ta1 brownish and ta2–5 all brown, mid and hind legs with distal part of ta1,2 brownish and ta3–5 all brown, ( Fig.15 View FIGURES 14–16 ). Abdomen brown yellowish with narrow basal dark brown bands on segments III–VI, uniformily brown on segments VII–VIII, ( Fig.16 View FIGURES 14–16 ).

Head. ER=1.70–2.40, 1.93. AR =2.32–2.73, 2.48; last flagellomere length 91–109, 101, temporal setae 23–27, 26. Clypeus with 16–18, 17 setae. Tentorium 224–232,227. Palpomere lengths (µm) 41–51, 47; 61–66, 64; 112– 149, 137; 142–199,174;171–331, 264.

Thorax. Antepronotals 6–9,8; 9–10 setae joined over mesonotal tubercle; dorsocentrals prox. 38–45 in three rows; prealars 7–8; scutellum with 25–30 setae irregularly distributed.

Wing. VR = 0.91–0.94; 0.92, R with 8–10 setae, C/WL 0.96–0.99, 0.98, Cu/WL 0.38–0.39, 0.39; cubital fork sesil. Squama with 21–40, 30 setae.

Legs. Spur of foretibia 71–81,76 long; spurs of midtibia 45–57, 52 and 59–79, 70 µm long; spurs of hind tibia 43–55, 49 and 71–77, 73 long, comb in two rows 11–14, 13 and 15–16, 16 teeth respectively; one tarsal spur in PI: ta1 37–51,46 long; two tarsal spurs PII: ta1 both 35–43, 40 long, ta 2 28–37, 33 and 30–39, 35 long, ta 3 26–35, 32 and 26–37, 33 long; PIII: ta1 32–49, 42 and 37–51, 45 long, ta 2 30–41, 37 and 30–45, 39 long, ta 3 28–37, 33 long.Length (in µm) and proportions of legs as in Table 3.

Abdomen. Abundant irregularly distributed setae.

Hypopygium. Tergite IX 75 –81, 79 long, posterior margin slightly protrude rounded. Phalapodeme 71–91(2) long. Transverse sternapodeme 142–152, 145 long. Gonocoxite 224–257, 238 long. Gonostylus 91–116, 105 long. HR = 1.93–2.55, 2.29; HV = 3.95–4.42, 4.26. Megaseta 10–16, 13 long.
