25. Syzygium munroi (Wight) Chandrabose View in CoL in Sharma et al. (1977: 58).
= Eugenia munroi Wight (1841: 14) View in CoL as ‘Munronii’. = Jambosa munroi (Wight) Walpers (1843: 191) View in CoL . = Syzygium munroi (Wight) N. P. Balakrishnan (1982 View in CoL [1980]: 174), nom. superfl. [isonym]. Lectotype (designated here): Wight, Icon. Pl. Ind. Orient. 2(3): t. 546. 1842.
Distribution:— India [Assam, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu]; 50‒1500 m.
Notes:—The protologue cites Munro s.n. from Coorg [Kodagu, Karnataka] as the type, but no specimens from this locality have been seen at K, E, CAL or BM. Although no specimens appear to be extant, Wight himself (1842) provided an excellent figure in his Icones, which we have no doubt was based on original material, and which we here designate as the lectotype. When the combination Syzygium munroi was published, the combining author was cited only as ‘Chandr.’, an ambiguous abbreviation that could apply to more than one author of the publication. The abbreviation has now been confirmed as applying to Marimuthu Chandrabose (K. Gandhi, pers. comm.).
Wight published this species with the epithet ‘Munronii’ in honour of its collector, Lieutenant William Munro (1818–1880). Wight apparently Latinised Munro’s name as ‘Munronius’ but this is contrary to Article 60.7 ( McNeill et al. 2012) and should be corrected. The editors of the International Plant Names Index have determined that the epithet should be corrected to ‘munroi’ (K. Gandhi, pers. comm.).
