Distribution:— India [Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam, Karnataka, Kerala, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu], Bangladesh, Cambodia, Malesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Sometimes cultivated; 0‒1000 m.
Notes:—Of all the probable original material, the specimen chosen as lectotype of Eugenia grandis is the best match to the description in protologue: “A magnificent species at once distinguished by its large broad oval, very obtuse, thick coriaceous leaves, and dense somewhat capitate many flowered cymes.”
When describing Jambosa firma, Blume cited the unpublished Wallich binomial but gave the distribution as ‘Borneo’ as well as ‘Sillet’. Since the taxonomic concept is based on Wallich’s name and Wallich specimens from Sillet/Silhet, which are listed in his catalogue as 3603A, we have selected a good representative specimen in the Munich herbarium as lectotype.
