Cowan (1929: 68), nom. superfl. Lectotype (designated here): H[ortus] B[otanicus] C[alcuttensis], Intr. e Silhet, Wallich Catalogue Number 3592 (K! [barcode K000821365]; isolectotype K! [barcode K000821367], E!, BM!). Remaining syntype:— Assam, Jenkins (M! [barcode M0210730])

= Eugenia balsamea var. angustifolia Duthie (1879: 499) View in CoL . Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. Assam, Khasia, J.D. Hooker & T. Thomson 10 (K! [barcode K000821362 ]; isolectotype BM!, M! [barcode M0137799 ]). Remaining syntype:— Assam, Khasia, J.D. Hooker & T. Thomson 9 (K! [barcode K000821361 ])

Distribution:— India [Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Tripura, West Bengal], Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar, Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam; up to 700 m.

Notes:— Wight (1841) described the species based on material supplied by Wallich from the Calcutta Botanic Gardens and Jenkins from Assam. Wallich Catalogue Number 3592 appears to be the material from Calcutta and an excellent specimen of this at Kew is designated as the lectotype ; it is also a specimen to which Wallich attached the epithet adopted by Wight. The Jenkins specimen is currently known only from the Munich herbarium. Duthie’s variety is represented by two syntypes collected by J.D. Hooker and T. Thomson, that are labelled as collected at 2000 and 4000 feet. We have chosen the first of these, given the number 10 on the label, as lectotype, since it has marginally narrower leaves .
