3. Eugenia indica (Wight) Chithra (1983: 153) View in CoL .
= Jossinia indica Wight (1842: 1 View in CoL t. 523). Lectotype (designated here):— Herb. Wight 523 (K! [barcode K000821508 ]).
= Eugenia cuneata B.Heyne ex Beddome (1872 View in CoL : cxii), nom. illeg.
= Eugenia jossinia Duthie (1879: 500) View in CoL , nom. superfl. & illeg.
Distribution:— India [Kerala, Tamil Nadu]; ca. 1200 m.
Notes:—Although no specimen was cited, the protologue of Wight’s Jossinia indica was accompanied by a detailed plate. Wight’s specimen at Kew (‘ex Herb. R. Wight’) consists of two elements. Of these, the right hand element is a good match for Wight’s plate 523, so we have selected this sheet as lectotype. The type locality is likely to be ‘Shevagherry hills near Courtallum’, as cited later by Wight (1841: 12). Beddome’s name, Eugenia cuneata , was not listed by Turner (2012) in his recent consideration of names published by Richard Beddome. However, this name is illegitimate since Beddome included the type of Jossinia indica (“ Wight Icones tab. 523”). Beddome attributes the name to Heyne, and cites the Heyne collection represented by Wallich Catalogue Number 3625, but following Article 7.5 ( McNeill et al. 2012) typification of this name is unnecessary. Duthie’s Eugenia jossinia was an illegitimate renaming of Wight’s species.
