Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (North Carolina to Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Antilles, Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Amapá, Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul), and Uruguay ( Melo 1996, 2010; Cruz-Castaño & Campos 2003; Felder et al. 2009; Hernández-Ávila et al. 2009; Boos et al. 2012).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Santos and Guarujá as bycatch of the lobster Metanephrops rubellus ( Severino-Rodrigues et al. 2007) . The morphology of this species was compared with S. furcatus by Colavite et al. (2016).
