Distribution. Western Atlantic—Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, and Argentina (south to Buenos Aires) ( Rathbun 1918; Crane 1975; Bezerra 2012; Masunari et al. 2020).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Ilha Piaçaguera in Cubatão (as “Santos: E. Piassaguera”) ( Rathbun 1918; Crane 1975), São Sebastião ( Luederwaldt 1919a, 1929), Santos ( Luederwaldt 1919b; Crane 1975; Bezerra 2012), Cananéia ( Gerlach 1958), and Ubatuba ( Bezerra 2012). This species presents the most extensive distribution towards south than any other American fiddler crab ( Crane 1975; Bezerra 2012). This species and M. mordax , are the only two with southwards distribution where mangroves do not grow ( Masunari et al. 2020).
