Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Virginia to Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Antilles, Colombia, Venezuela, Guianas, and Brazil (Amapá, Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul) ( Holthuis 1959; Powers 1977; Lemaitre 1981; Barreto et al. 1993; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Bertini et al. 2004; Almeida et al. 2007a, b; Hernández-Ávila et al. 2007; Melo 2008, 2010; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records in São Paulo include Ubatuba (Bertini et al. 2004), Caraguatatuba ( Braga et al. 2005), Santos-São Vicente estuary and bay complex ( Pita et al. 1985; Sant’Anna et al. 2012; Watanabe et al. 2014). A recent study indicated genetic structure among populations of C. ornatus and signs that the Amazon-Orinoco plume represents a osmotic barrier, with the presence of two evolutionary units that should be investigated regarding the taxonomic status ( Peres & Mantelatto 2020). Sequences accession number (GenBank): ULLZ 4178—16S ( AJ298186 View Materials ) ( Schubart et al. 2001), ULLZ 4178—COI ( MF490074 View Materials ) ( Mantelatto et al. 2018a).
