Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Florida, Gulf of Mexico), Antilles, and Brazil (Amapá, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul). Mid Atlantic—Ascencion Island. Eastern Atlantic— Africa ( Senegal to Congo) ( Milne-Edwards & Bouvier 1923; Rathbun 1937; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Powers 1977; Manning & Holthuis 1981; Williams 1984; Abele & Kim 1986; Melo et al. 1989, 1998; Manning & Chace 1990; Melo & Campos Jr. 1994; Melo 1996, 2008; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo mentioned Cananéia ( Ilha do Bom Abrigo) and Santos (Baia de Santos and Laje de Santos) with the material deposited in the MZUSP collection (10895, 9422 and 4227, respectively) (Melo & Campos Jr. 1994); some samples include Guarujá where specimens might have been unloaded at fishing harbours ( Severino-Rodrigues et al. 2007).
