Brachiacantha tau LeConte 1859:28 . Gordon 1985:562.
Brachyacantha tau: Crotch 1873:378 . Crotch 1874:212. Leng 1911:305. Leng 1920:213. Korschefsky 1931:207.
Type material: Not examined.
Material examined: USA: SOUTH CAROLINA: “ Oconee Co., Seneca , 10-IV-2000, Andy Boone, Ex: ETOH” ( USNMNH) (1♀, 2♂) ; same data, “ 03-IV-2000 ” ( USNMNH) (2♂) . MEXICO: NUEVO LEON: “ 5 mi S Monterey , 09-VII-1963, A. T. Howden ” ( USNMNH) (1♂) .
Distribution: USA and Mexico. Gordon (1985) claimed that this species was found only west of the Mississippi, but some specimens examined are labeled as being from South Carolina and one specimen was apparently collected in northern Mexico. The South Carolina specimens could be mislabeled, but the species was previously recorded from southern Mexico by Malkin (1950).
Hosts: Some specimens from Arizona, deposited in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods, have been collected on Atriplex sp.
